Series 3: Ant + Building “STUGGLE”

To create three-dimensional art beyond the two-dimensional paintings, H & J make ceramic sculptures that are re-constructed by whole colonies of ants.

This art series “renounces control and authorship of the work and allows it to evolve as a collective” (Miller, 2016, p.214). In aesthetic appreciation, the audience will see the complete “Ant City” from all angles, placing the role of human artists in a secondary position. Attention will be paid to the association between the work of ants, the magic of nature, and the remaining artificial objects. The audience will then draw a connection from the resemblance between structures built by ants and by humans, coming to an understanding that “it is not a question of imposing a form upon matter but of elaborating an increasingly rich and consistent material, the better to tap increasingly intense forces.” (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987, P.329)
